Oncology Scar Therapy – What is scar therapy?

Scar Therapy is used to improve scar appearance and function. Reduce pain, tightness, and sensitivity and empower you with self care. As the body repairs a scar forms on the skin, and there will be an internal scar too. Delays during wound healing, infections and radiotherapy can leave you with excessive or symptomatic scar tissue.

Why have scar therapy?

Perhaps historic surgery or injury has left you with ongoing symptoms that could benefit from scar therapy…

Oncology Scar therapy can help soften and improve scar tissue:

  • Improved mobility; scar therapy helps with restrictions in surrounding tissues, which is particularly beneficial for restoring the range of movement.

  • Reduced Pain and Discomfort; scar therapy’s specialised gentle massage can reduce itching, tightness, sensitivity, and pain, including pain from nerves trapped during surgery.

  • Improved Appearance; scar therapy helps flatten, soften and fade scars, lessening the appearance of puckering and pulling.

  • Breaking down adhesions and restoring natural tissue; scar therapy treats fibrosis and “stuck” tissues that develop after surgeries, i.e., mastectomies, stoma procedures.

  • Emotional well-being; scar therapy is a form of self-care, providing a comforting therapeutic touch that can reduce anxiety and boost confidence, helping you feel more in control of your recovery.

  • At the end of your treatment, I will teach you simple scar massage techniques and a skin care routine.

Treatments can begin around 6 – 8 weeks after surgery once the wound has healed and scabs have fallen off.

Scar therapy is for both new and older scars.

Scar therapy involves gentle specialised manual techniques to relax the nervous

system and manage long term side effects.

Deep Oscillation Therapy maybe incorporated into treatments to suit your requirements.

Results can be noticed after a single session, although a short course is often recommended.

Your scar will not vanish, results can vary and are different for different people.

Having your scar therapy as soon as possible after your scar has formed is most likely to improve how your scar looks (cosmetic appearance). Any surgery or trauma can be emotionally challenging, scar therapy leaves you feeling a sense of relaxation, feeling of lightness and ease of movement.
